Zamfara state Government provided six thousand tree seeds for planting as part of it's efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and create a sustainable environment for the well-being of it's citizens
This was contained in a press Released signed by the information officer ministry, Mallan Abubakar Aliyu and made available to the legacy newspaper in Gusau the state capital.
According to the press released, State Commissioner of environment and natural resources, Muhammad Dantawasa, who was represented by the permanent secretary of the Ministry Alhaji Garba Altine Dauran disclosed this during the 2024 world environment day celebration held in Gusau.
The statement said, Dantawasa emphasized the importance of tree planting in combating desertification, erosion, and other environmental challenges facing the state, and also highlighted the need for collective action and community involvement in environmental conservation efforts.
“Various species of tree seedlings provided by the state government such as Neem, Gum and Mahogany, which are known for their environmental benefits and ability to adapt to the local climate and soil conditions” he noted.
He therefore urged residents to take advantage of the opportunity to plant trees in their communities, schools, and public spaces to enhance the beauty and sustainability of the environment.
Mahmud Muhammad Dantawasa, also called on relevant stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, community groups, and development partners, to support the state government's tree planting initiative and contribute to the overall goal of creating a greener and healthier environment for all.
In his Goodwill message Emir of Gusau Dr. Ibrahim Bello who was represented by the senior distric head of Gusau, Alhaji Bashir Kabir Dan Baba commended the State Government on its effort in promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development in the state.
"It is hoped that, the seedlings provided will be well cared for and contribute to a more resilient and prosperous environment for future generations". He said.
Speaking at the occasion, project coordinator of ACRESAL Project, Malan Nasirudden Bello Gusau said, the specific focus on "land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience in the state and also highlights the urgent need to address these environmental challenges in the state,
"Desertification, land degradation, and drought are significant threats to agricultural productivity, food security, and livelihoods in arid and semi-arid regions like Zamfara by promoting land restoration practices, building resilience to drought, and combating desertification" he said.
He added that, communities in the state can improve their environmental sustainability, enhance food security, and increase their resilience to climate change impacts.
In his remark NAGGW official, Alh. Sani Muhammad, emphasizes the importance of addressing environmental issues in tandem with social and developmental priorities, ensuring that environmental protection efforts benefit all segments of society, particularly vulnerable populations such as children and marginalized communities.
Alhaji Sani said, partnership between World Environment Day and UNICEF underscores the interconnectedness of environmental health and human well-being, and also highlighted the importance of integrated approaches to sustainable development.
