NEMA sensitizes Zamfara communities on flood prevention

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) takes sensitization campaign to the riverine communities of Zamfara State on the danger of flood and possible prevention mechanism ahead of 2025 raining season.

Addressing  Communities in Gusau, Director General NEMA Zubaida Umar point out that, the rainfall and flood forecast contained in the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) had provide us with valuable insight into rainfall pattern and flood scenarios during the year.

The Director General represented by the Deputy Director Relief and Rehabilitation Department, Mallam Suleiman Mohammed added that NEMA had developed the 2025 Climate Related Risk Management Implication, Preparedness and Mitigation Actions out of the NIMET, NIHSA predictions to serve as a guide to reduce impact of this year’s flooding.

Umar said part of our flood early Warning System NEMA identified disaster risk management implications and mitigation strategies for communication to communities at the risk during the year raining season.

She noted that, Some of the disaster risk management implications identified by NEMA include, delayed onset of the rain in some state of the federation, earlier than normal cessation of rains, delayed cessation, shorter than normal growing season.

“All these had a growing implications on socioeconomic sector such as disaster management, healthcare, agriculture, transportation, energy, telecommunications, water and power generation”

She called on all communities especially the riverine communities to be vigilant and proactive to flood and other disaster in their environment.

Also speaking the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Musa Kainuwa Warned residents against dumping refuses inside drainage or waterways.

He called on all riverine communities to vacate their house before the full raining season to prevent on foresee circumstances considering the early warning by NIMET, NIHSA on this possible flooding.

Kainuwa represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Alhaji Bashor Maradun said “we must properly management our environment as consequence of flooding is savior.

He said building on the waterways remained the major source of concern to government, attributing flooding to the blockage of our drainages.
